What you need to know first is that in spite of the fancy name of the modals, there's nothing complex at all with the mixolydian scale. If you start with a major scale, let's say D major, then D major is the ionian scale in that case, with A mixolydian major being just an expression of that very same scale (but starting with A, obviously). As you can see, the only difference here compared to said D major is that, when working the same scale starting from the A, you will have a C instead of a C#. Outside of classical music, the mixolydian is widely used in jazz and blues music. Some samples for guitar here:
